Guidelines on Stray Management

With the support and encouragement from animal welfare advocates nationwide, SPCA Selangor has been lobbying the government for several years now to set humane standards for dog-catching, pound management and euthanasia by municipal councils. We’ve heard the stories - stray dogs left hot and hungry in trucks for days on end, dog-catchers entering into house compounds and catching pet dogs, and overcrowded dog pounds where healthy, injured and sick dogs are mixed together.

In November 2007, SPCA submitted our ‘Humane Guidelines for Stray Management, Shelter & Euthanasia’ document, which was well-received by the Department Of Veterinary Services (DVS), Putrajaya. On the 26th of May 2008, DVS organised a Stray Management Seminar for local municipal councils where the department introduced their “Garis Panduan Penangkapan Dan Pelupusan Anjing Terbiar” (Humane Guidelines on Stray Management) to the local councils, veterinary associations and animal welfare NGOs. The document contains detailed information on humane pound management, dog catching, transportation, euthanasia and highlights the Five Freedoms For Animals!

In late June 2008, the DVS wrote to the State Governments, recommending the usage of the Humane Guidelines as a reference in carrying out stray management activities in their respective areas - humanely. On behalf of animal lovers, animal welfare advocates and the animals, SPCA would like to thank DVS Putrajaya for the pro-active measures in ensuring the welfare of stray animals, and commend them on a job well done !

End Extreme Horse Fighting Cruelty in Phillipines

Network for Animals Phillipines wants to build clinics to treat injured horses and to educate local people about caring for animals. It is also encouraging tourists to avoid the southern Philippines. WSPA and SPCA Selangor would also like to seek your help to join this campaign against this horribly barbaric horse fighting.

You can register your protest to this horrific cruelty too. Please write to the embassy of the Philippines in our country, explaining that:

* You believe horse fighting and the inhumane slaughter of horses is cruel and therefore unacceptable.
* You are disappointed that the Philippines’ animal welfare legalisation is not being upheld, allowing these illegal fights to continue.
* You will not consider visiting the island of Mindanao or encouraging others to do so until the laws preventing horse fighting are fully enforced.
* You would like to know what the government of the Philippines intends to do to address this issue.

I am writing to express my concern over the Melinsung Ranch, Sabah Cruelty Case where horses are starving and dying after being neglected by the owner of the Ranch, I appeal to you to act in this case and confiscate the horses and prosecute the owner using the animal protection Law in Malaysia – the Animals Act 1953.

Please end the suffering of the Horses immediately and prosecute the owner of the Ranch who is responsible for causing this cruelty with the equal penalty.
