You have probably read in the news recently (the Star, Nov 13) that the
Department of Environment has given green light for developers to clear
2,255 acres of mangroves in Sungai Pulai for the construction of
petrochemical and maritime industries.SOS is appalled to learn that the Detailed EIA, which has been
specifically ordered by the State Menteri Besar (16 Aug 2007) to assess
the development impact in greater detail, had not been carried out.
The call for Detailed EIA was pressured by NGOs and various agencies,
including you and me. Close to 4,000 online petitions have been created by
SOS and these will again be used in the upcoming Press Conference to
conserve Sungai Pulai.Meanwhile, for those of you who feel strongly about preserving the
seahorse, seagrass and the rich Sungai Pulai biodiversity, this would be a
critical time to write in to the decision makers, expressing your concerns
and requesting for their explanations.Let our voice shakes their offices and our letters flood their desks. Also
let your voice be heard in the mainstream media. Please let us have a copy
of their feedback if you receive any.Best wishes,

The types of industries proposed are shocking. They include themanufacturing of industrial gases, synthetic resins, paints, varnishes, petro refinery, shipbulding and repair, chemical incinerator and harzadous waste, fertilizers and pesticides, rubber remilling and latex processing etc.
In the name of enriching themselves and in the name of development, our government is allowing this to happen. Hasn’t the global warming message and all its recent disasters awaken any of our people? Until the tsunami wash their loved one’s lives away and until the earth under Malaysia quakes to bring forth thousand deaths, grief and loss, only will they know what they have done - and even so, it may be too late.
Time to wake up and preserve our bio-diversity.
